Convicted serial offender Kazungu Denis to appeal life sentence

Kazungu Denis, who was convicted of 10 serious crimes including multiple murders and sentenced to life imprisonment, is set to appeal his sentence before the High Court of Kigali on June 13, 2025.

Kazungu was arrested in September 2023 after investigators uncovered a pit in the kitchen of his rented residence in Busanza Cell, Kanombe Sector, Gasabo District, containing bodies of victims he admitted to killing.

He was later found guilty of a series of violent and cyber-related crimes, including premeditated murder, rape, torture, illegal access to computer systems, concealment of corpses, issuing threats, and unlawful detention. The Intermediate Court also ordered him to pay Rwf 30 million in damages to his victims.

During trial, Kazungu pleaded guilty and asked for leniency, citing his cooperation with authorities during the investigation. However, according to UMUSEKE report, he expressed dissatisfaction with the court’s decision and is now seeking a reduction of his life sentence.

The prosecution is expected to oppose the appeal, maintaining that the original sentence was proportionate to the gravity of his crimes.

The case shocked the nation when it first broke in 2023, with details of the hidden burial site drawing widespread public outrage.
