Rulindo: INEZA Foundation Fosters Community Literacy Through Umuganda Initiative

Inside the serene library of INEZA Foundation at Ikirenga Cultural Center in Rusiga Sector, Rulindo District, children gathered for a mass reading session during a special Umuganda Community Literacy event.

The initiative, which aims to nurture a culture of reading, brought together local children, parents, and educators to celebrate and promote literacy.

Marie Jeanne Igihozo, a Senior Three student, and Fillette Uwituze, a Primary Six pupil, shared how reading has positively impacted their academic performance and personal development.

“Reading increases my chances of succeeding and helps me connect with other children to share reading experiences,” said 13-year-old Igihozo, a student at G.S Nkanga.

She added, “My parents have bought me books to read at home. I encourage other children to embrace this culture of reading and urge parents to support their children by buying books.”

Similarly, Uwituze highlighted the value of reading, stating, “I read to gain skills and also help other children at school and my siblings at home by teaching them how to read properly.”

Advancing Literacy in Rulindo

INEZA Foundation has become a transformative force in promoting a reading culture in Rulindo District. Since 2018, the organization has established two community libraries, providing residents with access to books and fostering literacy.

From November 27-30, 2024, the Ikirenga Cultural Center hosted a Book Market Rally in collaboration with SOMA Rwanda Network and the USAID-funded Ibitabo Kuri Twese (Books for All) project. The rally featured local authors, publishers, and retailers showcasing and selling books to community members.

Ineza Foundation was delegated by Soma Rwanda as a member to collaborate with USAID Ibitabo kuri Twese during the three-day event. This was due to its operation of the Shyorongi Community Library in Rulindo, popularly known as the Ineza Children Reading Corner.

Speaking during the Umuganda reading event, Janvier Niyonsaba, Project Manager at INEZA Foundation, emphasized the importance of community literacy efforts.

“We have been here for three days, mobilizing local communities to embrace a culture of reading while availing books. Since establishing our libraries, we’ve seen significant progress, with about 80 visitors daily at each library,” Niyonsaba said.

Changing Perspectives on Reading

Niyonsaba noted a positive shift in attitudes toward reading, particularly among parents who previously underestimated the value of libraries.

“Today, more people recognize that reading changes lives. It boosts research skills and is a vital source of knowledge,” he added.

Yedidya Senzeyi Aimée, Chief of Party for USAID Ibitabo Kuri Twese, also underlined the significance of the book market in promoting literacy.

“We work with local government officials, educators, authors, and retailers to ensure books are accessible and affordable. By collaborating with stakeholders, we aim to make reading materials available nationwide,” Senzeyi said.

Challenges and Advocacy

Despite these efforts, challenges remain, including the high cost of books and lingering misconceptions about reading. Senzeyi noted that USAID Ibitabo Kuri Twese is advocating for lower book prices through private-sector engagement to ensure wider accessibility.

As Rulindo District continues its journey toward a literate society, initiatives like those by INEZA Foundation and its partners are vital in transforming lives and fostering a love for reading among Rwandan communities.
