Rwanda Hosts EAC Security Experts Meeting

Experts from East African Community (EAC) member states convened in Kigali, Rwanda, for a meeting aimed at enhancing collaboration on security matters. 

The meeting, which runs from Monday, November 18, to Wednesday, November 20, 2024, focuses on improving mechanisms for addressing threats posed by chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) materials across EAC countries. 

In his remarks, Brig. Gen. Dr. Ngoga Eugene, representing the Chief of Defense Staff of the Rwanda Defense Force (RDF), expressed gratitude to the experts for attending and emphasized the significance of the gathering. 

“Your presence here underscores our shared commitment to safeguarding regional security and protecting our citizens against the complex and growing threats posed by CBRNE terrorism,” he stated. 

He highlighted that the forum would strengthen regional collaboration and preparedness. 

“Through this platform, we demonstrate the unity that advances the EAC’s goals. Together, we have the opportunity to establish a robust framework that enhances our resolve, coordination, and regional security,” he added. 

Colonel Deng Mayom Manyang Malual, Head of Regional Defense Cooperation from South Sudan and representative of the EAC Secretary-General, expressed confidence in the success of the meeting. 

He commended the multidisciplinary team of experts, including doctors, chemists, military personnel, police officers, and civilians, for working together to draft a comprehensive document that will guide military operations among EAC member states. 

The East African Community (EAC), comprising eight member countries, aims to promote sustainable development and regional integration in areas such as trade, infrastructure, health, security, and more.
