Kagame Calls on Rwandan Diaspora to Propel the Country Forward

President Paul Kagame, during the 11th edition of Rwanda Day in Washington D.C., emphasized the crucial role of the Rwandan Diaspora in steering the country to its rightful place.

Themed “Rwanda: A Legacy of Inclusiveness within and beyond Our Borders,” the event gathered over 6,000 Rwandans and friends abroad to deliberate on the nation’s progress and avenues for collective contribution.

Acknowledging the importance of Rwanda Day in maintaining connections with the homeland, Kagame urged the Diaspora not to distance themselves from Rwanda, emphasizing that while they may leave the country physically, Rwanda should remain an integral part of their identity.

As Rwanda commemorates 30 years since emerging from the tragedy of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, President Kagame directed his message to the younger population, stressing the significance of their role in shaping the nation’s future. He expressed confidence in the youth, urging them to make choices that would elevate Rwanda to new heights.

While recognizing the accomplishments of the people, Kagame emphasized the need for continued efforts across various sectors, such as business, politics, philanthropy, and faith organizations. He underscored that more is expected from each individual, aligning with the reality of Rwanda’s current situation.

Reflecting on the nation’s journey, marked by challenges and resilience, Kagame emphasized the importance of learning from the past. He urged Rwandans not to underestimate the potential threat of a similar tragedy, emphasizing the need to remain vigilant and adequately prepared.

Using the metaphor “lightning doesn’t strike twice in the same place,” Kagame called for proactive defense mechanisms to prevent a recurrence of historical hardships. He stressed the necessity of applying lessons learned from past tragedies, emphasizing the value of self-reliance during times of need.

In a ‘meet the president’ session, members of the Diaspora engaged with President Kagame, expressing gratitude, posing questions, and offering suggestions aligned with the country’s development agenda. The event showcased the collective commitment to Rwanda’s progress and the vital role of the Diaspora in shaping its destiny.
