By The Inspirer.

The Rwanda Defense Force (RDF) has arrested a soldier, Sgt. Gervais Minani, who is suspected of shooting and killing five civilians at a bar in Nyamasheke District on the morning of Wednesday.

The tragic incident occurred in Rusharara Cell on the morning of November 13, 2024, following a dispute between Sgt. Minani and the bar owner, where the soldier had been drinking.

Reports indicate that after Sgt. Minani finished his drink, he attempted to pay the bar owner through Mobile Money, but the owner refused, insisting on cash payment.

After the disagreement, Sgt. Minani was reportedly allowed to go back to his base to retrieve cash. He returned dressed in military uniform and carrying a weapon, which he used to shoot civilians.

The Rwanda Defense Force stated, “The RDF is saddened by the tragic incident that took place at a bar in Rusharara Cell, Karambi Sector, Nyamasheke District, where Sgt. Gervais Minani, 39, is suspected of fatally shooting five people early on November 13, 2024.”

The statement continued, “The RDF has arrested the suspect and is taking appropriate steps to ensure legal proceedings are followed.”

The RDF expressed condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their loved ones in this tragedy.
