Winners of the African Women in Art Award 2024 Announced

The African Women in Art Award (AWAA), a competition for women artists from Sub-Saharan African countries, has unveiled its list of winners.

This year, the theme of the competition, “Mother Africa,” invited artists to explore and celebrate the essence of African identity, heritage, and the nurturing spirit of the continent through their creative works.

The international jury selected artists from 36 applicants representing 11 African countries, focusing on those who demonstrate a remarkable synthesis of creativity and innovation, reflecting the diverse cultural heritage and contemporary perspectives of African women. The winners include both established masters and emerging artists from countries such as Nigeria, Zambia, Namibia and Ethiopia.

Their works blend unique traditional influences with modern forms of self-expression, resonating with audiences both locally and internationally.

The list of winners is divided into two categories: Emerging Artists and Established Masters. Additionally, a Special Prize has been established for artists whose works were highly appreciated by the selection committee.

Emerging Artists

This category highlights new talents whose works are recognized for their innovation, fresh perspective, use of new techniques, and integration with modern communications.

This category features experienced artists who share their expertise and insights, drawing from a wealth of professional experience in training and exhibitions.

Mixed Media: Natasha Evans (Zambia)

Sculpture: Mulenga J. Mulenga (Zambia)

Special prize: Millicent Osumuo-Onuegbu (Nigeria), Selamawit G. Tsadik (Ethiopia)

These exhibitions will celebrate the winning works and provide the artists with a platform to connect with collectors, critics, and audiences worldwide.
