US nominates career diplomat Nicholas Checker as ambassador to Rwanda
By Elias Hakizimana.
United States President Donald Trump has nominated senior diplomat Nicholas Checker to serve as the next US ambassador to Rwanda, with the appointment now awaiting confirmation by the US Senate.
If confirmed, Checker will succeed Eric Kneedler, who concluded his assignment in Kigali earlier this year after serving as US ambassador since October 2023.
Checker currently serves as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Southern Africa and Foreign Assistance at the US Department of State. Before assuming that role, he led the Bureau of African Affairs as Senior Bureau Official.
Prior to joining the State Department, Checker spent more than a decade at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), where he worked on issues related to the Middle East and the Horn of Africa. He also served in the CIA’s Office of Congressional Affairs between 2014 and 2025.
During President Donald Trump’s first administration, Checker was Deputy Executive Secretary at the National Security Council.
Under the US appointment process, ambassadorial nominees must first be reviewed by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee before their nominations are considered by the full Senate. Once confirmed by the Senate, the president formally appoints the ambassador.
Checker holds a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from the University of Wisconsin and a master’s degree in Security Studies from Georgetown University.
His predecessor, Eric Kneedler, is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service. Before his posting to Rwanda, Kneedler served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, including a period as Chargé d’Affaires. His previous diplomatic assignments also included postings in Bangkok, Thailand, and Jakarta, Indonesia.
The nomination comes as Washington continues its diplomatic engagement with Rwanda and the broader Great Lakes region. The timeline for Senate consideration of Checker’s nomination has not yet been announced.
