Six people were killed and six others injured in a road accident involving a truck and a coaster in Bwishyuhura Sector, Karongi District, on Friday, September 11, 2026.
The accident occurred at around 2:30 p.m. when a truck travelling towards Karongi collided with a coaster heading in the opposite direction, according to Traffic Police spokesperson Emmanuel Kayigi.
Kayigi told The New Times, which first reported the incident, that the truck was attempting to manoeuvre around a corner while passing another vehicle when it collided with the coaster.
The impact caused both vehicles to fall off the road.
“Six people died at the scene, while six others, including the coaster driver, were injured and taken to Kibuye Hospital for treatment,” Kayigi said.
All six people who died were passengers in the coaster, he added.
Kayigi said the truck driver fled the scene after the accident, while police were working to locate and apprehend him.
He urged motorists and other road users to exercise caution, avoid rushed decisions and comply with road safety rules.
“Everyone using the road should pay attention, avoid making bad decisions and follow road safety rules because they are meant to protect lives, not simply to avoid penalties,” he said.
