U.S. warns its citizens about security risks in Kinshasa

The United States government has advised its citizens to leave the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kinshasa, due to security concerns, urging them to avoid large gatherings.

In a statement released on Monday, January 3, 2025, the U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa announced that it would be reducing the number of staff at the embassy. It further recommended that American citizens in the DRC leave the country as soon as possible.

The statement read: “Due to the security situation in Kinshasa, the U.S. Embassy will not be processing visa applications at this time.”

The embassy also urged Americans to always be prepared and keep essential items, including bags, and to exercise caution at all times.

The U.S. noted that the N’Djili Airport in Kinshasa is still operational and functioning normally.

The U.S. government also advised its citizens to avoid places where large crowds gather and to stay clear of any protests or demonstrations.

Reports indicate that violence continues in Kinshasa, with protests against the M23 rebel group, which is engaged in ongoing fighting with the Congolese Army (FARDC).

Recently, residents of Kinshasa have attacked several foreign embassies, accusing them of failing to take action against the M23 group.

Since then, acts of violence have escalated, targeting countries such as Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, several European nations, and the United States.
