Serial Killer Kazungu Receives Life Sentence

Denis Kazungu, infamous for his role as a ‘serial killer,’ has been sentenced to life in prison by the Nyarugenge Intermediate Court for the deaths of 13 individuals, predominantly women.

The verdict, delivered on March 7, saw Kazungu found guilty on all 10 charges, including murder, forgery, and rape.

During the sentencing, the presiding judge highlighted Kazungu’s admission of guilt to all charges and the compelling evidence presented during the trial.

Despite pleas for leniency, the judge deemed Kazungu’s crimes deserving of the maximum penalty, emphasizing the absence of mitigating factors.

In addition to the life sentence, the court ordered Kazungu to compensate the families of his victims for their losses.

The trial, which unfolded on February 9, revealed the gruesome details of Kazungu’s crimes, which spanned from April of the previous year until his arrest on September 5, 2023, in Kicukiro District.

Kazungu’s reign of terror came to light during rental disputes with his landlord, leading authorities to uncover his heinous acts.

Upon his arrest, Kazungu confessed to murdering and burying his victims within the premises where he rented. Evidence, including images of torture tools and survivor testimonies, painted a chilling portrait of his actions.

Among the victims were Eliane Mbabazi, Eric Turatsinze, Francoise, and Clementine, whose lives were tragically cut short.

The prosecution presented evidence of rape, theft, threats, and other violent acts, along with deliberate property destruction and forgery, further highlighting Kazungu’s brutality.

Throughout the trial, Kazungu expressed remorse while denying poverty as a motive, acknowledging the profound impact on both families and the Rwandan community.

Despite his pleas, the prosecution pushed for the maximum penalty, underscoring the severity of his crimes.
