Rwanda’s New Cabinet and RGB CEO Take Office, Pledging National Progress

On Monday, August 19, newly appointed Cabinet members and the new CEO of the Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) took their oaths of office, marking the start of their service in the government’s next five-year term.

The 21 Ministers and nine Ministers of State, appointed on August 16, stepped into their roles under the leadership of Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente, who was reappointed a week earlier.

The swearing-in ceremony was presided over by the Head of State, accompanied by Gertrude Kazarwa, the newly elected Speaker of Parliament, and Senate President François-Xavier Kalinda. The event highlighted the continuation and renewal of leadership within the government.

While many of the ministers were reappointed, bringing continuity to key portfolios, the Cabinet also welcomed new faces. Prudence Sebahizi has taken over as the Minister of Trade and Industry, Richard Nyirishema as the Minister of Sports, and Christine Nkulikiyinka as the Minister of Public Service and Labour.

Additionally, Doris Uwicyeza Picard was sworn in as the new CEO of the Rwanda Governance Board, succeeding Usta Kaitesi.

The Cabinet plays a critical role in implementing national policies and is accountable to both the President and Parliament. As outlined in the Constitution, the Prime Minister is responsible for leading the government’s operations in line with the President’s main guidelines and ensuring the execution of laws.

The Prime Minister is also tasked with formulating government programs in consultation with Cabinet members and presenting these programs to Parliament within 30 days of taking office.

This new lineup of leaders has pledged to drive forward the nation’s development agenda, building on the progress made in previous years and addressing the challenges that lie ahead.
