Uganda Kicks Off Presidential Campaigns Ahead of 2026 Elections

Uganda has officially launched its presidential campaigns ahead of the 2026 general elections, setting the stage for a three-month political race featuring eight candidates, including long-serving President Yoweri Museveni.

The campaigns, which kicked off on Monday, will run across all 146 districts until January 1, 2026, ahead of the presidential vote scheduled for January 2.

Museveni, who has been in power for 39 years, is seeking a seventh consecutive five-year term. His main challengers include Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, a musician-turned-politician and leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), and Nathan Nandala Mafabi of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

According to Julius Mucunguzi, spokesperson for the Electoral Commission, preparations are complete to ensure free and fair elections. Campaigns will be held daily from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

“We have agreed on a harmonized campaign program for all eight presidential candidates. We urge them to adhere to the schedule and follow the set guidelines,” Mucunguzi said.
