Rwanda’s midwives tipped on evidence-based practices to reduce maternal, newnborn mortality

As the world celebrates the International Day of Midwives, the midwives professionals of Rwanda are advised to continue making evidence-based practices to avoid any cause of maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity.

Under the theme: ‘Together Again, From Evidence to Reality’, the International Day of Midwives (IDM) is being celebrated in Kigali and was introduced with a Midwife Scientific Conference that gathered various actors on May 4, 2023.

Under The celebration of this day was organized by Rwanda Association of Midwives in partnership with Health Development Initiative (HDI), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Josephine Murekezi, Chairperson of Rwanda Association of Midwives (RAM) requested midwives professionals to avoid any mistakes that can cause maternal and newborn mortality.

“We are happy for the achievements we made through our association, as we celebrate the IDM, I would request the midwives to keep in mind that this day should remind us that we must avoid any mistakes that our colleagues still doing as they can cause maternal and/or newborn mortality,” Murekezi said.

Murekezi recommended the midwives to continue providing quality services and to remain accountable during their daily works.

During this conference, experts demonstrated practical skills to young midwives who are in the Rwanda Midwifery Students Association (RMSA).

According to Mary Murebwayire, an Official from the Ministry of Health and Senior Midwife reminded midwives to always be careful and respect their profession.

Peace Mutoni, one of the RAM members said that the IDM helps her to think of the profession and to link up with other professionals through skills and knowledge sharing. She said that every midwife who is member of the association should be passionate and give value to customers.

Patrick Heri, RMSA vice-president requested RAM to help them to explain their services to the citizens from the grassroot level.

Currently, there are over 2,500 midwives in Rwanda with only 400 who are registered as RAM members.
