Karongi: Resident’s Cow Killed with Machete in Land Dispute

By The Inspirer.

In Karongi District, Rugabano Sector, Mubuga Cell, a resident named Hakuziyaremye Protais had his cow brutally killed with a machete in a suspected land dispute.

The incident occurred on Saturday night, November 16, 2024.

Reports indicate that Hakuziyaremye suspects the act was committed by a person from whom he had recently purchased land. The suspect allegedly continued grazing their livestock on the land, despite selling it, leading to ongoing disagreements.

Emmanuel Ndacyayisenga, the acting Executive Secretary of Rugabano Sector, confirmed the incident, saying, “The cow was found in its enclosure, fatally injured with a machete by unidentified individuals. The owner suspects the seller of the land, and their conflicts appear to stem from grazing issues.”

Ndacyayisenga added that the seller of the land denied using the property for grazing but reportedly told the cow owner that the matter would only be resolved once the cow was no longer on the property.

The local leader noted that authorities were unaware of the conflict before the incident, which limited their ability to intervene early. Investigations are underway to identify the perpetrators.
