Rwanda extends nightlife and business hours during FIFA World Cup period

The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) has announced extended operating hours for bars, nightclubs, restaurants and other commercial establishments during the FIFA World Cup period, in a temporary measure aimed at supporting economic activity and improving service delivery across the hospitality sector.

The directive, which takes effect from June 12 to July 20, 2026, applies nationwide for the duration of the tournament.

Under the revised schedule, businesses including shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs will be allowed to operate until 3:00 a.m. from Monday to Thursday, while operations on weekends and public holidays will be extended until 4:00 a.m.

RDB said the decision is intended to accommodate increased demand for hospitality and entertainment services during the global football tournament, while enhancing the experience of residents and visitors.

The authority added that the temporary arrangement is also expected to stimulate activity in tourism, hospitality and entertainment-related businesses, which typically benefit from major international sporting events.

Despite the extended hours, RDB maintained that existing regulations on public order, noise control and responsible alcohol consumption remain fully in force.

It reiterated that the sale of alcohol to persons under the age of 18 remains strictly prohibited and urged businesses to uphold responsible service standards, including avoiding the sale of alcohol to visibly intoxicated customers.

Authorities also reminded the public to observe road safety regulations, including refraining from driving under the influence of alcohol.

The temporary measures replace previous operating hour restrictions that required nightlife establishments to close earlier during weekdays and weekends.
