Rwanda criticizes UK for sheltering suspected genocide perpetrators

Rwanda’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, Johnston Busingye, has condemned the UK for harboring individuals suspected of participating in the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, allowing them to live freely while justice remains elusive.

Speaking at a ceremony commemorating the 32nd anniversary of the genocide, organized by the Rwandan embassy in the UK, Busingye highlighted the country’s failure to act compared to other nations.

“For more than three decades since the genocide, the United Kingdom has remained the only Western country known to shelter suspects who continue to live openly despite being identified by survivors,” Busingye said. “Even today, six or seven of them reside in the UK, their identities and locations are known, yet attempts to extradite or prosecute them have failed.”

He pointed out that other countries in Western Europe and North America, including France, Germany, the United States, and Canada, as well as nations in Sub-Saharan Africa like Uganda and Malawi, have made notable progress in tracking and prosecuting individuals implicated in the genocide.

Busingye stressed that the UK has long neglected its responsibility to ensure that suspects who fled after the genocide, leaving many children orphaned, are held accountable.
