Rwanda and Botswana sign key agreements to boost trade, aviation, and investment ties

Rwanda and Botswana have signed a series of cooperation agreements aimed at deepening bilateral relations and removing barriers to trade, investment, and mobility between the two countries.

The agreements, signed during President Paul Kagame’s working visit to Botswana, cover air transport cooperation, avoidance of double taxation, visa exemptions, and broader economic collaboration.

President Kagame was received at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport by Botswana President Duma Boko, before the two leaders held bilateral talks followed by extended discussions between senior officials from both sides.

The agreements are intended to facilitate easier movement of people and goods while strengthening business and investment flows between the two countries.

President Kagame said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to development beyond diplomatic relations, emphasizing the need for practical outcomes that directly benefit citizens.

He noted that the agreements are designed to remove existing bottlenecks and build confidence in cross-border trade and investment.

He also commended Botswana’s governance, particularly its management of natural resources such as diamonds, saying it demonstrates how strong leadership can convert national wealth into public benefit.

President Kagame highlighted ongoing cooperation in justice and security, adding that the partnership is increasingly expanding into economic sectors, including trade and investment.

He stressed that the success of the agreements will be measured by their impact on citizens’ livelihoods, rather than the number of documents signed.

The visit is expected to further strengthen institutional cooperation, with additional engagements planned, including a state dinner hosted by President Duma Boko and a tour of Botswana’s diamond trading institutions in Gaborone.
