Rutsiro: Illegal Miner Dies After Pit Collapse, Companions Flee the Scene

Emmanuel Niyomugabo, 31, who was engaged in unauthorized artisanal mining, died after being trapped under a collapsed mining pit in Karumbi Village, Kirwa Cell, Murunda Sector, Rutsiro District. The illegal mining activity occurred in close proximity to a regulated mining site. While Niyomugabo perished in the accident, his fellow miners escaped the collapse and fled the scene.

A local resident who reported the incident to Imvaho Nshya stated that the tragedy happened at approximately 12:30 PM on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, when a group of miners entered the site without authorization to extract valuable minerals. When the pit caved in, trapping Niyomugabo, his companions opted to flee rather than assist him, fearing apprehension by authorities.

“There was initial confusion with reports suggesting that the deceased was employed by a licensed mining company nearby, RURU Forest. However, investigations later confirmed that he was not affiliated with the company but was engaging in illegal mining,” the source explained. Authorities and security personnel arrived shortly after, recovered the body, and transported it to Murunda Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Rutsiro District’s Vice Mayor for Economic Development, Emmanuel Uwizeyimana, verified the incident and confirmed that the miners who were with Niyomugabo remain unidentified, as they fled the scene immediately after the collapse.

“This was an area previously known for illegal mining activities, close to a legally operated mining site. The confusion arose when some believed the deceased was working for the RURU Forest company. Upon investigation, we found that the mining activities were unauthorized,” he stated.

The Vice Mayor added that the incident came to light thanks to tips from local residents, some of whom may have been involved in the illegal activity before returning to report the tragedy. Local officials, along with law enforcement, responded swiftly to the scene to recover the body, which was later transferred to Murunda Hospital for further examination.

Rutsiro District is grappling with the challenge of illegal mining operations. On the same day as this fatal incident, two other individuals were apprehended for conducting unauthorized mining in a nearby pit. The Vice Mayor called on the community to cease engaging in illicit mining, stressing the inherent dangers.

“Many people turn to illegal mining for quick, unregulated profits, bypassing formal employment with licensed mining companies. However, illegal mining carries numerous risks, including fatalities, and these miners often lack insurance coverage, leaving their families vulnerable in the event of tragedy,” he said.

Niyomugabo is survived by his wife and five children.
