Religious Leaders Commended for Promoting Cleanliness in Rubavu Community

In Rubavu District, Mudende Sector, Bihungwe Cell, religious leaders, particularly Pastor Etienne Nsanzimana of Brethren Church, are receiving praise for their pivotal role in advocating for cleanliness within the community.

Pastor Nsanzimana emphasizes that their teachings encompass various aspects, including personal hygiene and proper cleaning practices.

“We assisted them in acquiring the knowledge of personal hygiene, guiding them through the proper techniques of bathing and laundering their clothes. Witnessing the positive transformation prompted me to join in prayer, and their improved appearance was truly remarkable.” He says.

While acknowledging the overall improvement in people’s awareness of cleanliness, Pastor Nsanzimana notes that some individuals still struggle to grasp its importance fully.

Residents, including Bigirimana Jean Marie Vianney, express gratitude for the positive shift they have witnessed. They highlight the transformation from neglecting cleanliness to actively engaging in regular cleaning rituals, such as prayer and personal hygiene.

Vianney also acknowledges the construction of essential facilities like water tanks and toilets, which has significantly contributed to maintaining cleanliness.

Traditionally, some used local remedies for skin-related issues caused by inadequate hygiene practices. However, the ongoing efforts by religious leaders and the introduction of modern facilities have played a crucial role in changing mindsets.

Nathan Hitiyaremye, NTDs-WASH Coordination Officer, Malaria Division at Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) underscores the importance of Faith-Based Organizations in reshaping attitudes toward sanitation. He notes that the active involvement of the temple’s congregation has led to increased awareness of cleanliness within the village, setting a positive example for others.

Hitiyaremye appreciates the community’s transformed attitude and its commitment to improved cleanliness practices. As a testament to this progress, residents have adopted a more positive approach to maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings.

RBC draws attention to the broader issue of diseases caused by poor hygiene, emphasizing that this problem poses a significant threat to Rwandans.

The prevalence of bilharzia disease, detected in 1013 out of over 2000 cells located in close proximity to wetlands nationwide, underscores the critical imperative for sustained initiatives in promoting cleanliness.

As this waterborne illness poses a significant threat to public health, particularly in areas adjacent to wetlands, ongoing efforts to enhance hygiene practices become paramount.

Addressing this challenge requires a comprehensive approach, including education, infrastructure development, and community engagement, to ensure a healthier and more resilient environment for all.
