President Trump to cut aid to South Africa

President Donald Trump announced that an investigation is underway into the actions of South African leaders who are stripping citizens of their land and mistreating some of the population. As a result, U.S. aid to the country will be suspended until the investigation into these issues is completed.

Recently, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa signed a law related to the relocation of citizens in areas where public interest projects are to be carried out, and where the government has deemed it appropriate and non-damaging. The law allows the state to take land without compensation.

When asked by journalists why he plans to suspend aid to South Africa, President Trump said it was due to the harmful actions being carried out by the country’s leaders. He stated, “There are scary things happening in South Africa, the government is doing terrifying things. An investigation is underway, and we will make a decision, but until we know what South Africa is doing, they are forcibly taking land, and it’s possible they are doing things worse than that.”

The law signed by President Ramaphosa replaces an apartheid-era law that led to the forced seizure of land from black citizens for the benefit of white people.

South Africa’s Minister of International Relations, Ronald Lamola, said they are ready to engage in discussions with the U.S. to explain the contents of the law on land expropriation for public benefit. “We will engage with our counterparts in the U.S. to provide them with a detailed explanation of the law and other issues concerning our bilateral cooperation.”

Currently, 25% of the land used for agriculture in South Africa belongs to black people, who make up 80% of the population. According to the Financial Times, the government plans to give black South Africans one-third of the country’s agricultural land by 2030.

In 2023, the U.S. provided South Africa with $440 million in aid. Now, Trump has suspended foreign aid for three months.

Trump also recently announced that countries in the BRICS economic bloc, including South Africa, will face sanctions if they abandon the U.S. dollar and introduce their own currency. This could include tariffs on their goods up to 100%.
