Dr. Nyagatare Jean Marie Vianney, a 56-year-old expert in obstetrics who was also the head of that department at Ruli District Hospital, was found dead in a latrine, strangled, with suspicion falling on a worker who had been taking care of his livestock.
The death of the late Dr. Nyagatare is believed to have occurred on Thursday, January 30, 2025, as he was last seen alive on that day.
The Executive Secretary of Ruli Sector, Hakizimana Jean Bosco, told IGIHE that the deceased had finished his work on Thursday evening and headed to the area where he had been raising cattle, but he never returned.
He said, “Preliminary investigations revealed that he was strangled, and it is suspected that he was killed by a herdsman who had been taking care of his cattle while he went to visit them. The herdsman immediately fled, but the investigation is ongoing to apprehend him and uncover more information about anyone who might have been involved. The place where he was killed is uninhabited, and the house looks like a lonely one in the middle of a forest. People who saw him going there last saw him around 6 p.m.”
Hakizimana explained that the discovery of his death followed his disappearance, which was noticed on Saturday.
He said, “His disappearance was confirmed on Saturday afternoon, and we immediately began gathering information. We later learned that he had gone to his cattle’s grazing area. We asked his family members to break the door, as it was locked, to see if perhaps he had fallen asleep and not woken up. When they entered, they found his clothes but no sign of him. We then began searching and found that he had been killed, placed in a sack, and thrown into a latrine nearby.”
The body of the deceased was immediately taken to Ruli Hospital for examination.
The family plans to bury him at the end of this week, as one of his children who was studying abroad is expected to return.
Hakizimana described the late Dr. Nyagatare as a good citizen with a kind heart and extended his condolences to the family. He also reminded the public that no one has the right to take another person’s life for any reason.
