President Paul Kagame arrived in Doha, Qatar, on Sunday morning, May 24, 2026, for a working visit aimed at further strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries.

Upon arrival at Hamad International Airport, President Kagame and his delegation were received by Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi, together with Rwanda’s Ambassador to Qatar, Igor Marara Kayinamura.

The visit follows a series of high-level exchanges between Rwanda and Qatar in recent months, reflecting continued efforts to deepen cooperation across strategic sectors.

In April 2026, President Kagame sent a special message to Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, delivered by Rwanda’s Minister of Interior, Dr Vincent Biruta, reaffirming the strong partnership between the two countries.

In November 2025, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani paid a two-day working visit to Rwanda, where he was hosted by President Kagame for high-level talks focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation. During the visit, he was also presented with Inyambo cattle, symbolizing friendship and cultural ties.

Qatar has also played an active diplomatic role in supporting peace efforts in the Great Lakes region, particularly through facilitating dialogue between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In March 2025, President Kagame and DRC President Félix Tshisekedi met in Doha for talks aimed at de-escalating tensions in eastern DRC.

Rwanda and Qatar continue to enjoy strong and long-standing relations, anchored in cooperation across key sectors including economic development, investment, tourism, aviation, and broader strategic partnerships.
