Police seize over one tonne of illegally traded minerals in Muhanga operation

Rwanda National Police in the Southern Province has arrested nine people suspected of involvement in illegal mineral trading and unauthorized mining activities during an overnight operation conducted in Muhanga District.

The operation, carried out on May 25, 2026, in collaboration with local authorities and residents, resulted in the recovery of one tonne and 123 kilograms of mixed coltan and cassiterite minerals.

Southern Province Police spokesperson Hassan Kamanzi said five of the suspects are accused of recruiting young people into illegal mining operations, while four others were caught engaging in unlawful mineral extraction activities.

“They were found with one tonne and 123 kilograms of mixed coltan and cassiterite, while others were involved in illegal mining activities,” Kamanzi said.

Police commended residents for continuing to share timely information and cooperate with security organs in efforts to prevent crimes that threaten public order and economic security.

Kamanzi noted that the increasing collaboration between citizens and law enforcement reflects growing public awareness that security is a collective responsibility.

He also warned individuals involved in illegal mining and mineral trafficking that security agencies are intensifying efforts to dismantle such operations and bring offenders to justice.

The suspects and the recovered minerals are currently being held at Kiyumba Police Station as investigations continue.
