Police in Gasabo arrest 16 suspected thieves after residents raise alarm

Rwanda National Police in Gasabo District has arrested 16 individuals suspected of engaging in theft and street robbery, following growing concerns from residents over increasing insecurity in the area.

The arrests, conducted in collaboration with other security organs and community members, targeted individuals allegedly involved in a wave of break-ins and roadside ambushes. Victims have reported the theft of household items and personal belongings, including mobile phones.

In one of the latest operations in Gatumba Cell, nine suspects were apprehended after two residents of Agasharu Village reported that burglars had broken into their homes and stolen valuables, including a television.

Kigali City Police spokesperson CIP Wellars Gahonzire, told UMUSEKE that the suspects were identified and arrested thanks to timely information shared by members of the public.

“They are currently in custody at Nduba Police Station as investigations continue,” CIP Gahonzire said, urging continued vigilance and community-police cooperation.

He praised residents for their role in crime reporting and emphasized that public participation is critical in ensuring security.

“Anyone engaged in theft or acts that threaten peace and order should rethink their choices. The police remain alert and are committed to bringing offenders to justice,” he added.

CIP Gahonzire also encouraged those tempted by criminal activity to instead seek legal and productive means of earning a living, noting that employment opportunities are available for those willing to work.

“The idea that someone can survive by stealing from hardworking citizens is both dangerous and unsustainable,” he said. “Crime does not pay, and security agencies will not relent in their pursuit of lawbreakers.”

The operation underscores Rwanda’s zero-tolerance stance on criminality and highlights the growing impact of community-driven policing in tackling urban crime.
