Police have issued a warning to vehicle owners regarding emissions of smoke

Rwanda National Police (RNP), in collaboration with Rwanda Environmental Management Authority (REMA) and other partners, have initiated a campaign to urge vehicle owners and drivers to monitor their vehicles to prevent the emission of pollutants.

This nationwide campaign encompasses various areas such as roads, passenger car waiting centers, media platforms, and car quality control centers.

According to REMA, vehicle emissions rank at the top among air pollutants, accounting for 40% of emissions.

The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes that air pollution adversely impacts public health, especially affecting vulnerable groups like pregnant women, children, and individuals with chronic illnesses. It increases the risks of lung cancer, heart disease, asthma, and other respiratory ailments.

Rwanda Police Spokesperson, ACP Boniface Rutikanga, highlighted the campaign’s objective to encourage motorists to take proactive measures to reduce air pollution caused by exhaust fumes. He stressed the importance of vehicle owners ensuring their vehicles operate efficiently to prevent harmful emissions, aligning with regulatory standards outlined in Presidential Decree No. 85/01 of 02/09/2002.

Deborah Nibagwire, an employee of REMA, underlined the detrimental impact of vehicle emissions on air quality and public health, particularly in urban areas. She urged vehicle owners to prioritize regular vehicle inspections and maintenance to prevent emissions of pollutants, thereby contributing to cleaner air for all.
