PL Party Submits 54 Candidates to NEC for Parliamentary Elections

On Saturday, May 18, 2024, the Liberal Party (PL), which advocates for individual freedom, submitted a list of 54 candidates to the National Electoral Commission (NEC) to represent the party in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Hon. Umuhire Adrie, the Secretary General of PL, presented the list of parliamentary candidates to the NEC for the elections scheduled for July 2024.

For the presidential race, the PL party has decided to support Paul Kagame, the candidate nominated by the RPF-Inkotanyi.

Secretary General Umuhire Adrie stated that the PL party’s objectives are based on three principles: freedom, justice, and development, aligning with the pillars of Rwanda’s governance.

The PL party chose to support the RPF-Inkotanyi candidate because they believe the country has been well-governed and that Paul Kagame is the right person to continue leading Rwanda, given his achievements for the Rwandan people.

Other political parties, including PSD, PL, PDI, PPC, PSP, PSR, and UDPR, have also expressed their support for President Kagame and have nominated him as their candidate for this year’s elections.

Hon. Umuhire Adrie emphasized that if the Rwandan people place their trust in them, they will deliver various governance-related achievements, as the country currently adheres to democratic principles.

“We are pleased that the country has chosen to follow a consensus-based democracy. We reinforce this and hope that Rwandans will support us so that we can contribute and appoint appropriate leaders,” he said.

In addition to candidates nominated by political parties, independent candidates have also started submitting their applications to be reviewed for compliance with the requirements.

The NEC has indicated that there are currently eight independent candidates for the presidency, while 41 individuals have received documents allowing them to gather signatures for parliamentary candidacies.

The NEC has also outlined key dates for this year’s electoral process.

Candidate submissions began on May 17, 2024, and will close on May 30, 2024.

Finalized candidatures will be announced on June 14, 2024, with approved candidates starting their campaigns from June 22 to July 13, 2024.

Rwandans living abroad will vote on July 14, 2024, while those residing in Rwanda will vote on July 15, 2024. Voters will elect the President and 53 Members of Parliament from political parties or independent candidates.

On July 16, 2024, elections will be held for 24 women deputies, two youth representatives, and one representative for people with disabilities.

Preliminary election results will be announced by July 20, 2024, with final results to be declared by July 27, 2024.

Approximately 9.5 million Rwandans aged 18 and above are registered to vote, including about 2 million first-time voters.
