Nyanza on top of 30 districts to realize Unity and Reconciliation

Nyanza District has won the best place in building a strong strategy in striving for Unity and Reconciliation between Genocide Survivors and Perpetrators during the fiscal year 2018-2019.

The District comes the 1^st out of 30 with 96 percent of marks, followed by Gisagara with 85 percent, Burera the third with 84.50%, Gakenke is the 4^th with 83 percent, Kamonyi is the 5^th with 82%, Huye, Bugesera and Nyamasheke the 6^th, 7^th and 8^th with 80.50 percent respectively.

Nyanza leads the 8 best performers while Nyarugenge is the worst looser (30^th) with 48 percent.

Eight Best performers were marked over 80 percent of marks as excellent, followed by 13 districts who also have good marks over 70 percent and the third category of 9 districts have less than 70 percent, and among them 8 passed and one district which is Nyarugenge comes the last with only 48 percent.

The initiative to award best performers of Unity and Reconciliation was organized by the National Unity and Reconciliation Council (NURC) in a bid to foster this journey and make the culture of Unity and Reconciliation a sustainable value among Rwandans.

Erasme Ntazinda, the Mayor of Nyanza District appreciated the best place they won as the fruit of partnership between citizens and other development partners including faith-based organisations and churches among others.

He said that this is a good achievement as the district did not gain a good place in 2015 when districts made a second round of performance of contracts to promote Unity and Reconciliation.

“The 2015 Rwanda Reconciliation Barometer (RRB) left our district with some gaps in Unity and Reconciliation, this pushed us to work hard and many positive results are seen among Genocide perpetrators and Survivors who were united through reconciliation journey,” Ntazinda said.

Prof Anastase Shyaka, the Minister for Local Government said that Unity and Reconciliation are the key to the national security, urging the last performer districts to put in efforts so as to make Unity and Reconciliation a success story.

“Security goes with Unity and Reconciliation and the development we need cannot be sustainable without Unity and Reconciliation among our people. It is a goal we must achieve without waiting for evaluators and this is a source of life of Rwandans. It is the heart of the country”. He noted.

Gicumbi District came the 1^st winner to realize the last year’s Unity and Reconciliation while Ruhango was the last. Nyanza district that leads this year’s best winners was the 18^th with 68 percent of marks.
