Nyagatare youth urged to shun illicit alcohol and unsafe beverages

Nyagatare Deputy Mayor in charge of Economic Development, Matsiko Gonzague, has urged young people to avoid consuming illicit alcohol and other unsafe beverages, warning that they threaten public health and wellbeing.

Matsiko delivered the message during the ‘Iwacu Muzika Festival’ concert held at Nyagatare District Stadium on July 18, 2026, where he called on residents, especially youth, to choose products that meet safety and quality standards.

He thanked security organs, the district security committee and partners for ensuring the successful organisation of the event, before using the platform to raise awareness about the risks associated with unregulated alcoholic drinks.

“We are conducting campaigns against illicit alcohol and unsafe drinks. They are killing us; they affect young people and older generations alike. We want people to consume alcohol and other beverages that meet quality standards so that we can continue increasing the life expectancy of Rwandans from about 70 years to 100 years and beyond,” Matsiko said.

He said responsible consumption of safe products is among the measures that can contribute to improving the health and longevity of citizens.

The deputy mayor also encouraged residents to continue subscribing to the community-based health insurance scheme as the new financial year begins.

He further commended President Paul Kagame for supporting the construction of Nyagatare Stadium, saying the facility has created a modern space where residents can enjoy major events and entertainment activities.

The Nyagatare event marked the fifth stop of the ‘Iwacu Muzika Festival’ tour, which began in Huye before moving to Ngoma, Muhanga, Karongi and Nyagatare.

The festival will continue in Musanze District on July 25, 2026, before concluding in Rubavu District on August 1, 2026.
