The Rwanda Police operating in the Eastern Province announced that in just one day, they seized 296 liters of illicit brew and eight kilograms of cannabis, while over ten people, mostly young people, were arrested.
These drugs were seized on February 17, 2025, with most of them confiscated in Nyagatare District. In Kiyombe Sector, 96 liters were seized, while six kilograms of cannabis and 62 liters of illicit brew were seized in Karama.
In Rukomo Sector, 40 liters were seized, and in Nyagatare Sector, 93 liters were confiscated.
Apart from Nyagatare District, in Ngoma District, five liters of illicit brew were seized in Mugesera Sector, and two kilograms of cannabis were seized in Rwimiyaga Sector.
The Police Spokesperson for the Eastern Province, SP Twizeyimana Hamduni, told IGIHE that more than ten people, all young individuals, were arrested in connection with drug trafficking, and he urged everyone to avoid consuming and selling drugs as they bring significant risks.
He said, “We remind people that drugs are still present and continue to cause various problems, including crimes that lead to family conflicts and violence. The consequences for families are severe, as those involved in drugs face multiple challenges, including abuse, arrests, and destruction of family wealth. People should avoid these consequences because the Police will not hesitate to arrest those involved.”
SP Twizeyimana further expressed disappointment that all the individuals arrested in connection with drug trafficking and consumption were young people under the age of 35. He urged them to seek alternative employment because engaging in drug-related activities puts them in danger.
