Nsanzimana warns Catholics against excessive alcohol consumption during Assumption celebrations

Rwanda’s Minister of Health, Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, has urged Catholics to avoid excessive alcohol consumption as they celebrate the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on August 15.

In a message shared on X on Saturday, Nsanzimana wished Catholics a happy Assumption Day while reminding them to celebrate responsibly and take care of their health.

“Wishing a happy Assumption Day to everyone celebrating. A day like this reminds us that our bodies are temples of God; we have a responsibility to take care of them. A healthy spirit in a healthy body,” he said.

The minister also invoked the Bible to warn against drunkenness, citing Ephesians 5:18, which cautions believers against excessive drinking.

“The Bible also reminds us: ‘Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to reckless living’ — Ephesians 5:18,” Nsanzimana said.

Assumption Day, known in Rwanda as Asomusiyo, is one of the major feasts observed by Catholics. It is celebrated every August 15 and commemorates the Catholic belief that the Virgin Mary was taken up into heaven.

The feast is marked by religious services and celebrations in Rwanda and many other countries around the world.

Nsanzimana’s message comes as Catholics in Rwanda gather for religious celebrations, with his emphasis focused on enjoying the occasion while avoiding harmful drinking habits.

The term “Assumption” is derived from the Latin word assumptio, meaning being taken up or raised.

In Rwanda, August 15 is also associated with traditional expectations of rain, which some people refer to as “blessed rain.” Others regard the rain as part of the country’s normal weather patterns rather than something specifically linked to the religious feast.
