NAEB launches onion and chili drying facilities to reduce post-harvest losses
By The Inspirer.
The Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (NAEB) has begun constructing modern drying facilities for onions and chili peppers, aiming to reduce post-harvest losses and improve the value chain.
This initiative is part of NAEB’s broader project to enhance food preservation and strengthen the agricultural value chain. The facilities will allow harvested onions and chili to be properly dried, extending shelf life and minimizing spoilage.
NAEB said the national-level facility is being built at its Kigali headquarters, alongside four other facilities in Rubavu, Rulindo, Bugesera, and Nyagatare districts. Once operational, these facilities will have the capacity to dry 199 tons of onions and chili in just 48 hours.
The infrastructure is expected to significantly cut post-harvest losses: onion losses will drop from 15.4% to 7.7%, while chili losses will decline from 17.2% to 8.7%.
These facilities align with NAEB’s strategy to improve the quality and competitiveness of Rwanda’s exports, while also empowering farmers to increase productivity and income.
Under the Second National Strategy for Transformation (NST2, 2024–2029), Rwanda aims to double its export earnings from $3.5 billion to $7.3 billion by increasing the value of agricultural and mineral products. This target relies on developing local processing industries and adding value to both farm and mineral produce.
The government’s plan also includes modernizing agriculture and livestock sectors. Agricultural production is projected to grow by 6% annually, while overall output is expected to rise by more than 50% through expanded irrigated land—from 71,000 hectares to 131,000 hectares—and increased use of improved inputs.
This project marks a key step in Rwanda’s efforts to strengthen export-oriented agriculture, reduce food losses, and increase farmers’ incomes while contributing to the country’s economic transformation.
