MPs Evaluate Fertilizer Supply Chain for Farmers

Members of Parliament are currently inspecting agricultural initiatives spearheaded by cooperatives and individual farmers who have consolidated land, focusing on identifying barriers in the distribution of subsidized agricultural inputs.

According to the 2022 national census, 69% of Rwandans are engaged in agriculture.

In the Government’s five-year development strategy, a key focus is on boosting the productivity of staple crops, including maize, beans, potatoes, rice, cassava, wheat, and bananas.

Yield improvements are projected to come through the expanded distribution of industrial fertilizers nationwide, aiming to increase fertilizer application rates from 70 kg to 94.6 kg per hectare, calibrated to align with varying soil profiles across regions.

From October 24-26, 2024, MPs began a nationwide tour, engaging with farmers in all districts to monitor the progress of the 2025A planting season.

The visits include assessing recently established terracing sites, inspecting fertilizer retail points, and addressing emerging issues in the supply chain.

They are also examining the readiness and quality of distributed seedlings, including agroforestry and shade trees, as well as coffee seedlings, to ensure effective access by farmers.

Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Gertrude Kazarwa, highlighted that, “This engagement with the people is to show solidarity, support their development efforts, and help resolve challenges in collaboration with local authorities.”

During their swearing-in ceremony in August 2024, President Kagame called on the MPs to prioritize public welfare by proactively identifying and addressing issues affecting Rwandans before they escalate.

In addition to assessing agricultural and livestock projects across various sectors, MPs will participate in a national community service event with residents on October 26, 2024.
