Kamonyi industries create jobs for over 2,000 residents

In the 31 years since the end of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Kamonyi District has witnessed the rise of 40 new industries, generating employment for more than 2,000 residents.

Speaking at the FPR-Inkotanyi District General Assembly on February 15, 2026, Deputy Mayor in charge of Economic Development, Uzziel Niyongira, described the growth as transformative.

“Before 2010, electricity could not even cross the Nyabarongo River, leaving communities trapped in underdevelopment. Today, over 80% of Kamonyi’s villages have access to electricity, up from zero just three decades ago,” he said.

The introduction of electricity has spurred industrial development across the district, with factories ranging from agro-processing to construction materials now operational.

“These 40 industries employ over 2,000 people, enabling them to support their families. This is a direct result of governance that prioritizes citizens’ welfare,” Niyongira added.

Residents praised the improvements, noting how access to electricity has transformed daily life. Uwineza Claire from Runda Sector recalled traveling to Kigali for basic services in the past. “Now our village has a salon, running water, and other amenities. Life has truly changed thanks to electricity,” she said.

Kamonyi FPR-Inkotanyi Chairman, Ndagijimana Jean Pierre, urged the youth to capitalize on opportunities presented by industrial growth and electrification, especially in agro-processing. He also encouraged those without substantial capital to access affordable loans through financial institutions or cooperatives to expand production and income generation.

This industrial expansion marks a significant milestone for Kamonyi, reflecting how infrastructure development and good governance can drive economic growth and improve livelihoods at the community level.
