President Kagame congratulates Senegal as they win 2025 AFCON with 1-0 victory over Morocco

Rwandan President Paul Kagame was among the distinguished guests at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final in Rabat on Sunday, 18 January 2026, where Senegal claimed a dramatic 1-0 victory over Morocco after 120 minutes of play.
Kagame praised the Senegalese team for their resilience, unity, and determination, while also commending Morocco for their skillful performance and hospitality.
The final, held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex, also drew FIFA President Gianni Infantino and CAF President Patrice Motsepe. President Kagame, accompanied by Secretary of State in the Ministry of Sports Rwego Ngarambe, described Senegal’s win as a source of pride and a reflection of solidarity and perseverance.
Senegal dominated early opportunities but could not convert until extra time. Morocco, playing at home, mounted intense attacks in the second half but failed to break through Senegal’s defense.
In the 94th minute of added time, Sadio Mané’s cross found Pape Gueye, who struck a powerful shot past Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bono, securing Senegal’s second AFCON title.
Sadio Mané was named the tournament’s Best Player, while Bono earned the Best Goalkeeper award.
Morocco’s Brahim Díaz finished as top scorer with five goals in seven matches. Senegal last won AFCON in 2021, defeating Egypt on penalties after a 0-0 draw.
The next AFCON, scheduled for 2027, will be hosted in East Africa—Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda, marking 50 years since the region last hosted the continental tournament.
