Kagame urges RPF members to focus on solving problems

President Paul Kagame has urged members of the ruling Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF-Inkotanyi) to focus on addressing challenges and delivering measurable results, saying effective politics should be defined by problem-solving rather than rhetoric or false claims.

Speaking at the RPF Political Bureau meeting held at the party’s headquarters in Rusororo, Kagame told more than 2,000 party members and invited guests that the party’s approach to politics is rooted in finding practical solutions that improve the lives of Rwandans.

“For the RPF, politics is about confronting problems and finding solutions,” Kagame said. “Politics based on lies, deception or fabricated achievements does not solve problems—it only creates new ones.”

The meeting brought together representatives of political parties, diplomats, senior government and private sector officials, as well as youth, who accounted for more than 60% of participants.

Kagame said achieving Rwanda’s development objectives depends on individuals fulfilling their responsibilities, arguing that progress should be measured by concrete outcomes rather than official claims.

“If children are not in school, they are not in school. You cannot claim to have achieved universal education when that is not the reality,” he said. “If people do not have access to quality healthcare, you cannot say they do. What we say must be reflected in what people actually experience.”

He called on public officials and party members to regularly assess why development targets are not being met and to identify practical ways of addressing shortcomings.

Kagame compared governance to treating an illness, saying problems cannot be resolved unless they are first acknowledged.

“If you fail to recognize that you have an illness, it will eventually overcome you because you never sought treatment,” he said. “These meetings are an opportunity to examine ourselves, identify our weaknesses and find solutions.”

He added that while some challenges can be resolved through individual effort, others require support from colleagues or institutions. Leaders, he said, should address issues within their own responsibilities while seeking assistance when necessary to tackle broader challenges.

Kagame said self-assessment and accountability are essential to improving performance and ensuring that development goals translate into tangible benefits for citizens.
