Homegrown solutions: students from Fr. Ramon TSS Kabuga built own classrooms

Students of level 4, senior 5, from Father Ramon TSS Kabuga in Ngamba Sector, Kamonyi District have officially inaugurated two new classrooms constructed by themselves. The ceremony took place at the school’s headquarter on November 18, 2022.

These students have been learning construction over the last two years. The ceremony coincided with a welcome session of new students enrolled in this school during this academic year. It also coincided with the catholic church’s education year.

Speaking to the media, the students appreciated the support by experts who helped them to practice theoretical skills acquired in class.

Hyacinthe Twizerimana, one of these students said that they started to sit and learn from the new classrooms. She noted that they have built them in a way that prevents heat, and with enough natural lighting system.

“We applied a good and efficient construction model, neither heat, nor humidity inside. We will be able to sit and learn comfortably. I have gained enough practical skills during construction process,” she said.

Jean de Dieu Ndayishimiye, another student who participated at the constructions said that the new classrooms will remain an unforgettable sign of their academic session at this school.

“We were given experts who guided us during the construction process of these schools. We used stones, clays and other materials. It is a pride for us, and we will be remembered by our younger brothers and sisters for this achievement,” Ndayishimiye said.

Father Rudahunga Cyiza Edmond Marie, Headteacher of Father Ramon TSS Kabuga said that the students’ achievement testifies their capability and is in regard with the existing competence-based curriculum.

“Such achievements of our students is the result of the education guidance they got, and we do promote competence-based education and knowledge. We want them to practice what they learn in different disciplines including construction, carpentry, etc.” he said.

Father Germain HABIMANA is in charge of catholic schools in Kabgayi Diocese. He urged students to be characterized by discipline, which is key towards good use of knowledge and skills acquired.

“The skills with tobacco addiction can be useless, we do request students to be decent youth who will play significant role to their communities,” he said.

Fr. Ramon TSS Kabuga school had had eight (8) classrooms, the current completed ones make them a total of ten (10) classrooms, with 417 students, 197 girls and 226 boys.

The school was thought and founded by Father Ramon in 1997 and was incorporated into government’s supported TVET schools in 2016. They deliver courses in Construction, Carpentry, Audio-Visual production, Computer science and business studies.
