Gicumbi Rallies for Climate Action: 25,000 Trees Planted in a Day

Residents of Gicumbi District have strengthened their commitment to environmental preservation, rallying behind the government’s efforts to combat climate change and foster sustainable development.

On November 1, 2024, during a special community service event, Environment Minister Dr. Valentine Uwamariya led thousands of locals in planting 25,000 trees across 10 hectares in Manyagiro Sector. The initiative reflects a shift in community awareness of the environment’s critical role in health and prosperity.

Residents from Cyumba and Manyagiro sectors expressed their commitment to forest conservation, stating that government-led awareness initiatives have reshaped their attitudes. “In the past, we were unaware that cutting trees causes erosion and environmental degradation. Now, we’re ready to protect these forests because we understand their benefits,” said Jean Claude Nsengimana, a local participant.

Claire Nyiraneza, another resident, highlighted the value of receiving fruit tree seedlings, noting their potential to improve land conservation and reduce malnutrition in the community.

Minister Uwamariya emphasized that the government plans to plant 65 million tree seedlings across the country this season to combat the impact of climate change. “Let us work together to expand our forest cover, not only to protect against climate impacts but to ensure cleaner air. Your dedication today is crucial, and we must also commit to nurturing these trees for a lasting impact,” she said.

In Gicumbi alone, over three million trees are set to be planted with support from the Green Gicumbi Project, aimed at countering climate change in the district.

Jean Marie Vianney Kagenza, head of the Green Gicumbi project, commended the community’s dedication, noting, “The shift in mindset here is impressive. After five years, we’re seeing active community participation in tree planting and environmental conservation.”

Historically, Gicumbi residents faced challenges in accepting conservation initiatives, but community-led awareness has brought about a significant transformation in attitudes.
