Gatsibo: Rwf 278 million water network to provide thousands of residents with pure water

Many residents from Gatsibo District used to struggle with the long journey to access water due to lack of adequate water facilities in their locations.
To bridge the gap, the district in partnership with Movement for the Fight against hunger in the world (MLFH) have on Tuesday , April 23, 2019 inaugurated a water network worth Rwf 278 Million of which the district contributed Rwf 25 Million.
This network of 53 kilometers that connects two sectors namely Muhura and Murambi will benefit 12,170 residents and was repaired after some damages.

François Amatsiko, one of residents from Rwankuba cell in Murambi sector is among the beneficiaries and was given a water facility to help neighbours access water near them where they will fetch and pay Rwf 8 per a jerry can.
Amatsiko said they were struggling to fetch stained water from Lake Muhazi, walking hours and hours, that also involved critical hygiene and sanitation as well as the delay and absence of children in classes.

” We use to fetch stained water from Muhazi lake but now we are lucky to have pure water facility near our households. We will improve on hygiene and our children will never delay or miss classes,” Matsiko said.
Speaking at the launch of a water network, Théogène Manzi, the Vice mayor in charge of Finance and Economic Development in Gatsibo District lauded efforts of development partners especially MLFH to support development programs of the district.
He urged residents to preserve these facilities and to always have hygiene by using pure water.

18 out of 56 water facilities are now operational in some cells of Muhura and Murambi like in Bibare, Nyamiyaga, Rwankuba and Rwimitereri.
By May 2019, the remaining 38 water facilities will have been installed in all cells of the two sectors.
Entirely, Gatsibo District targets to give pure water access to 36,740 people during the current fiscal year 2018/2019.
