Gakenke: Young mothers got food stuffs donation from Association Bamporeze

A total of 100 young mothers who gave birth while still depending on their parents from Gakenke District in three sectors were donated with food stuff including rice, maize flour and beans to help them survive the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic.

The initiative is owned by Association Bamporeze, a local NGO that caters for orphans and vulnerable children in Rwanda in partnership with Gakenke district under the support of Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF)-Rwanda.

Speaking during the ceremony to distribute these basic needs on Saturday, May 1, 2021, Speciose Mushimankuyo, in charge of Human Resources and governance said that  :“We though on supporting these vulnerable young mothers with temporally food stuff and we believe it will help them survive during this period of Covid-19.” She said.

Catherine Uwimana, the vice mayor of Gakenke district in charge of Social Affairs said that these young mothers currently face poverty issues, gender based violence and school dropouts among others.

She said that the district grouped them in the saving groups so that they manage to tackle some financial issues.

“The district has a plan to help some of these young mothers who may wish to return to school or to embrace Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).” Uwimana said.

During 2019-2020, there were 196 young mothers who gave birth while still living with their parents. These mothers are taught reproductive health and discipline to avoid further lures.

Beneficiaries speak out

Leoncie Dusabimana, a mother of one 4-year-old son from Kivumu village, Rusagara cell, Gakenke district. She thanked partners to help them get food because life without job is not easy for them.

“It was not easy to feed my child nowadays, we are seven people in the family and we are facing food scarcity.” She noted.
