Students accompanied by teachers of culinary arts at Kigali Excellent Tourism and Hospitality Academy (KETHA) have on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, made a field trip to Khana Kazana Hotel in Nyarutarama-Kigali to learn practical skills.
After the trip, they said they are ready to join the labour market with the vision to foster service delivery within the hospitality industry.
Jean Paul Kamanzi, culinary arts students’ representative-level-1, at KETHA said that the trip was very important.
“We have experienced the ‘Mise-en-place’ service in the kitchen, we visited stores and fridges, we saw how they produce cocktail juices and how they store beverages, we have enough toolkits at school for practices, but this trip has added a significant value to our practical skills,” Kamanzi said.

Other students’ testimonies
Aisha Mumporeze, said: “a field trip as such is very important for us, it has boosted our practical knowledge of what we learn in class, we have leant how they welcome clients, we leant to prepare the bed, and we have seen how chef cooks behave,”
Celestin Byankundiye, another student said: “This field trip package has supplemented the theories we learn at school, it will help us to increase our knowledge and skills and we are ready to implement what we learnt,”
Belyse Uwase, another student said:”This field trip was essential, I have seen how they serve clients and serve them food and beverages and how they produce different cocktails, my knowledge about these services was not adequate, the field trip leaves us with professional confidence, and we are ready to join the labour market,”

Alain Jean Paul Munyankusi, Director of Studies at KETHA said that the trip at hotel is paramount for the students of culinary arts and hospitality to be able to implement theoretical skills from school.
“This trip helps students to boost theoretical skills to hands-on skills, the expectations from this field trip has reached the maximum goals, students have managed to visit and do practices in various hotel places including the sleeping rooms, we do not have the rooms at school and they make part of hotel’s services, so, our expectations have been met at 100 percent,” Munyankusi said, adding that they need to continue helping students to boost practical skills by conducting further field trips.
He requested the students to boost customer care and service delivery to promote a good reputation of the country at the international level.
Aline Uwamahoro is a class teacher of level-1 students in culinary arts told The Inspirer that the main reason of having field trips is to foster practical skills both in the kitchen and in the sleeping rooms.
“We wanted to show them what is done in culinary arts, preparing dishes, arranging kits, we have taken them at the hotel to see how they are done, they have also got practical experience in housekeeping (80%), they have arranged the dinning services, and I believe they are well equipped,” Uwamahoro said.
