Alleged shooter Sgt Minani sentenced to life imprisonment over killing five civilians

The Military Court has sentenced Sgt Minani Gervais to life imprisonment and stripped him of his military rank after convicting him of unauthorized use of a firearm, intentional homicide, and theft, damage, and concealment of military equipment.

The crimes were committed on November 13, 2024, when Sgt Minani, 39, allegedly opened fire in a bar in Karambi Sector, Nyamasheke District, killing five civilians.

The victims included Denis Benemugabo, 17, Onesphore Habumugisha, 20, Zephanie Sindayiheba, 44, Jonas Muhawenimana, 35, and Ezira Nsekambabaye, 51. All were pronounced dead at the scene.

Sgt Minani fled after the incident but was later arrested in Hanika. The victims’ bodies were transported to Kibogora Hospital mortuary before being buried. During the funeral, the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) offered condolences to the families and assured them of justice and support.

On December 3, 2024, the court held a public trial in Rubyiruko Village, Karambi Sector. Sgt Minani expressed remorse, claiming he was provoked by insults and physical assault from bar patrons, including the owner, which led to his actions.
