AFC/M23 says it remains committed to peace process despite alleged violations

The AFC/M23 armed group, which is in conflict with the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), says it remains committed to ongoing peace efforts but accuses Kinshasa of repeatedly violating ceasefire and peace agreements.

In a statement, the group said diplomatic and mediation initiatives are still ongoing but claimed that the Congolese government continues to disregard previously signed agreements while relying on military operations instead of dialogue.

AFC/M23 further alleged that civilians are being affected by continued airstrikes and ground military operations in populated areas, leading to loss of life and displacement.

“AFC/M23 recalls that it is part of the peace process and remains committed to the agreements signed. It stresses that sustainable peace cannot be achieved without equal participation of all stakeholders,” the statement read.

The group criticized what it described as repeated violations of agreements by the Kinshasa authorities, arguing that a continued military approach undermines trust and delays prospects for a lasting political settlement.

It also raised concerns over what it termed selective international responses to the conflict, saying such positions weaken accountability and fairness in addressing human rights violations.

According to the statement, international credibility depends on impartiality and equal consideration of all victims, regardless of the parties involved.

AFC/M23 said it is documenting alleged abuses against civilians, adding that all victims must be recognized and all incidents properly recorded.

The group called on the international community and regional stakeholders to approach the peace process with neutrality, professionalism, and courage, warning that political interests should not obstruct efforts toward a durable solution.

“A lasting peace in the DRC requires truth and impartiality,” the statement said. “Peace cannot be built on selective justice but on balanced engagement and honest dialogue.”
