Rwanda Signs Deal with Qatar-Based Firm to Boost Access to Cancer and Heart Medicines

KIGALI — Rwanda Medical Supply (RMS) has entered into a new partnership with Philex, a pharmaceutical manufacturer with operations in Qatar, to expand access to essential medicines, including drugs for cancer, heart disease, and hypertension.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Rwanda’s Ambassador to Qatar, Igor Marara. Officials described the deal as an important step in strengthening health cooperation between the two countries.

Philex, headquartered in the Salalah industrial zone in Oman, is an internationally recognized producer of high-quality, affordable medicines and medical supplies. The company uses modern technology to manufacture a wide range of drugs, including advanced cancer treatments and cardiovascular therapies.

As part of the deal, Philex also signed a separate cooperation agreement with Rwanda’s Labophar Ltd on Sunday, paving the way for the delivery of tablets and powdered medicines to the local market.

The partnership builds on Rwanda’s growing ties with Qatar. In 2024, during a virtual International Security Conference, President Paul Kagame highlighted the strong relationship between the two nations, noting that joint projects aim to spur economic growth and improve citizens’ wellbeing.

Among the key ventures is the ongoing expansion of Kigali International Airport in Bugesera, alongside strengthened cooperation in aviation, technology, and security.

Kagame stressed that Rwanda’s development is rooted in national unity, with investments focused on health, education, food security, innovation, and industry.

The new pharmaceutical deal is expected to ease access to life-saving drugs in Rwanda while reinforcing a broader partnership with Qatar that extends beyond economics into defense and security cooperation.
