Rusizi: 15-Year-Old Found Dead in Suspected Suicide
By The Inspirer.
Nishimwe Fillette, a 15-year-old girl from Rusizi District, was found dead hanging from a rope after she had prepared to leave for school. Authorities suspect it may have been a suicide.
The incident occurred on October 30, 2024, in Gatanga Village, Gakoni Cell, Muganza Sector.
Fillette’s younger sibling, who had just finished getting ready, called out to her so they could leave for school. When she didn’t respond, he went back inside to check and found her room locked. He alerted neighbors and their mother, who had left early but quickly returned. They forced the door open and found Fillette hanging from a rope, unresponsive.
Jean de Dieu Rwango, the Executive Secretary of Muganza Sector, confirmed to IGIHE that security personnel and the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) were called to the scene, and her body was sent to a health center where doctors confirmed her death.
He stated, “The reason for her suicide is still unknown. Her mother, younger sibling, and neighbors reported that she had no known issues, had a good relationship with other children, and no one had mistreated her. It has left everyone puzzled.”
Rwango expressed condolences to the grieving family, noting that although the exact reason for the girl’s actions is unknown, there must have been one.
He advised, “Parents should frequently talk with their children to understand any problems they may have, so they can address them before children make harmful decisions like suicide.”
The late Nishimwe Fillette was a fifth-year student at Ruganda Primary School, located in Rwimbogo Sector. After the medical examination, her body was returned to her family for burial.
