Nyamulagira Volcano Erupting in Eastern DR Congo, Lava Flows Reported – Xinhua

Nyamulagira volcano, located in eastern DR Congo, has been erupting since Saturday, October 12, reports Xinhua.

The Goma Volcanological Observatory (OVG) confirmed the eruption late Monday, describing a significant overflow of lava from the crater, which has spread across the northern, western, and southwestern flanks.

Charles Balagizi, scientific director of the OVG, told the Congolese Press Agency that three distinct lava flows have formed, with the longest advancing up to 7 kilometers. He noted that the fiery glow from the summit is visible from Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, located about 25 kilometers away.

Nyamulagira, also known as Nyamuragira, is an active shield volcano within the Virunga Mountains and is situated inside Virunga National Park. It is one of Africa’s most active volcanoes, with its most recent eruption occurring on March 14, 2023.

Despite the ongoing volcanic activity, Congolese authorities have not yet issued an official statement. However, the OVG reports that the lava flows are unlikely to threaten Goma, as past eruptions have typically been contained within Virunga National Park or nearby roads.

Goma is home to two active volcanoes, Nyamulagira and Nyiragongo. While Nyamulagira’s eruptions typically pose little risk to populated areas, the nearby Nyiragongo volcano is infamous for its deadly 2021 eruption, which killed at least 32 people.

As of now, OVG continues to monitor the situation, using satellite data to track the lava flows and assess potential risks.
