Addressing Family Conflicts: GALS Program’s Impact on Couples in Kayonza

The Gender Action Learning System (GALS) has been a game-changer for residents of Gahini Sector in Kayonza District, significantly reducing family conflicts and fostering development-oriented discussions within households.

GALS is a structured approach where family members engage in discussions aimed at enhancing gender equality and mutual support in various activities crucial for family development.

Testimonies from residents reflect a noticeable improvement in family dynamics since adopting the GALS methodology.

This program was spearheaded by the Kayonza Irrigation and Integrated Watershed Management Project (KIIWP) under the support of Government of Rwanda, in collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), through the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI), and implemented by Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB).

Speaking to The Inspirer, Odette Nyirahabineza from Gahini Sector, Juru Cell, Ikimana Village, emphasizes the role of GALS in conflict reduction.

“Utilizing visual tools, GALS motivates every family member to express their ambitions. These visual depictions illustrate our present family dynamics, upcoming goals, and methods to surmount challenges, promoting collaborative efforts for cohesive family life and advancement,” she elaborates.

Nyirahabineza highlights that GALS promotes gender equality and cooperation within families, facilitating open dialogue on goals, challenges, and equitable contributions toward family development without undue burdens or secrecy, all geared towards progress.

“I realized I used to splurge on personal luxuries, neglecting shared resources. GALS teachings prompted me to reevaluate my priorities. For example, I switched from expensive things to more affordable alternatives,” Nyirahabineza explains.

Similarly, Jean D’amour Ndayambaje, who underwent GALS training, embarks on the principles of gender equality and mutual support.

“Despite my role as a church educator, conflicts persisted at home. GALS helped me confront hidden disparities within our family structure, fostering transparency and mutual responsibility,” Ndayambaje elaborates.

Eugenie Mukandereya from Juru Cell, Gahini Sector, recounts her transformation post-GALS learning.

“Previously, I made unilateral decisions, overlooking my children’s input. GALS encouraged me to involve them, leading to shared responsibilities and a mindset shift. Now, my children actively contribute to household tasks before attending school,” Mukandereya shares.

Kayonza District Mayor, John Bosco Nyemazi, acknowledges GALS’ positive impact on family cohesion, although specific statistics were not provided.

“Through collaborative efforts with various stakeholders, including religious and civil society groups, we promote educational initiatives. While quantifying the exact impact is challenging, we observe tangible changes. Our commitment remains steadfast in fostering mindset shifts through education,” Nyemazi affirms.

Highlighting the district’s goals, Nyemazi mentions ongoing efforts to formalize relationships, with a target of legalizing 600 cohabiting couples annually.

In 2023, 890 couples in Kayonza district benefited from GALS-inspired interventions spanning sectors, community cells, religious institutions, and organizations.
