Rwf100 Million MCC Building to shine life for Gisagara cow farmers

Citizens from Musha Sector in Gisagara District who among them a big number are farmers are happy for the new building under construction dedicated to collect milk produce as they will make benefits and drink quality milk.

The Milk Collection Center (MCC) is located in Bukinanyana cell and was planned in the 2019-2021 fiscal year budget. They still wait for the machine to start milk collection activities.

This milk collection center will be collecting 2500 Liters of milk per day.

This facility was constructed by Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Board (RAB) with the funding support of His Excellency President of the Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame. The building has the value of Rwf43 million without machines.

Dominique Kabandana, a cattle farmer from this cell milks 40 liters every day. He said he used to struggle to take the milk in Ndora cell, which was not easy for farmers.

He explained that sometimes the sun or rain could make them a huge loss as milk could lose quality while on way to the MCC in Ndora cell.

“For example when it could be raining, I could not manage to take the milk there, and during the hot season, milk could lose quality. Besides, they used to pay us little money (RWF170/RWF180 per 1L) but here they accepted to pay us RWF 200 per 1L).” Kabandana said.

He added that they will manage the time they used to spend when taking milk to the MCC in Ndora and use that time for other activities.

Speaking to IGIHE, citizens from Musha sector said the new MCC building will enable them to drink quality milk. They said they used to buy milk from the shops and could not trust the quality.

Jerome Rutaburingoga, the mayor of Gisagara district said that this MCC has the capacity to receive 2500 liters per day. The MCC is the second in the district.

He said that two MCCs are not enough in the district, noting that they need two more mil collection centers to serve 13 citizens from sectors making the district as every MCC will receive milk from three sectors.

“One milk collection center collects milk from Musha, Mamba, Gikonko and the part of Gishubi, another MCC is in Ndora Sector. It collects milk from Kibirizi, Gishubi and Ndora and a part of SAVE sector. Kansi, Kigembe and Nyaruteja zones have their MCC; Mugombwa, Mukindo-Muganza zones also need a Milk Collection Centre.” Rutaburingoga said.

He said that every sector will be having its MCC in coming days as cow farming is expanding development activities.

Dr. Solange Uwituze, Deputy Director General for Animal Research and Technology Transfer at RAB said that both the building and the machines that will be used to process milk will cost Rwf100 million.

“Any Milk Collection Centre with all equipments cost Rwf100 million. There was a delay to bring and install the machines because of Covid-19 pandemic.” She said.
