Denis Kazungu, an alleged serial killer facing 10 charges, including murder and rape, made an appearance before the Nyarugenge Intermediate Court on Friday, February 9. Accompanied by his lawyer Faustin Murangwa, Kazungu, attired in a prison-issued pink shirt and shorts, stood as the prosecution presented the details of his alleged crimes.

During the hearing, the prosecution recounted Kazungu’s disturbing actions, revealing that from April last year until September 5, 2023, Kazungu resided in a house in Kicukiro District, Kanombe sector. It was only after issues arose with his landlord, prompting an investigation, that authorities uncovered a grim discovery – human bodies buried on the property.

Upon his arrest, Kazungu confessed to killing and burying 13 people in the house, divulging some of their names to investigators. The prosecution presented evidence of torture, including images of torture tools and testimony from escapees, painting a chilling picture of Kazungu’s brutality.

In addition to murder and rape charges, Kazungu faces allegations of theft, threats, and unauthorized access to victims’ phones. Despite pleading guilty and expressing remorse, Kazungu denied poverty as a motive for his crimes. While the prosecution seeks a life sentence and a fine of Rwf 10 million, Kazungu pleaded for leniency and asked for forgiveness, vowing not to commit further crimes.

This case underscores the deep impact of violence on families and the Rwandan community as a whole.
