What to expect from the newly launched PISA awareness campaign in Rwanda

Kigali, March 17, 2025 – The Rwandan education system is poised for a transformative leap with the launch of the PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) awareness campaign. This initiative aims to educate the public, stakeholders, and educators about the significance of international assessments like PISA and their implications for improving educational systems on both global and local scales.

Kugumaho Khaleb, a fourth-year student in the PCB program at EFOTEC, emphasized the potential benefits of the PISA assessment, stating that it will enhance his critical thinking abilities, improve his English language skills, and solidify his knowledge in core subjects such as mathematics and science. “I am confident that students like me will be well-prepared for this opportunity,” he noted.

Dr. Bahati Bernard, the Director General of the National Examination and School Administration (NESA), officially launched the campaign today. He stressed the importance of engaging with this assessment, saying, “This assessment will provide us with a broad perspective on how our education system stands on the international stage. It is crucial for Rwandans to understand and engage with this assessment so that the outcomes do not come as a surprise.”

The PISA assessment will target students aged 15 and those aged 16 who have not exceeded two months past that age. It will be conducted in 213 schools across Rwanda and focus on three key subjects: mathematics, science, and English. The chosen age group aligns with students who have completed compulsory education and are transitioning into the next phase of their educational careers

Ingabire Gerardine, a student representative, pointed out that this assessment could be particularly intimidating for girls, as many harbor fears regarding such tests. “I will prepare carefully for it and make it a source of pride for my country,” she affirmed.

The PISA awareness campaign is not merely an introduction to an assessment; it engages the community in meaningful discussions about educational outcomes. It seeks to emphasize the value of educational assessments while highlighting strategies for enhancing learning environments for students. Dr. Bahati also urged teachers to facilitate students’ familiarity with the PISA assessment format, clarifying that it should not be seen as an additional burden but rather as an opportunity for growth.

“This initiative continues to promote education in Rwanda and aims to enhance the quality of education and the capabilities of students in a global context,” Dr. Bahati concluded.

As Rwanda embarks on this vital journey to improve its educational landscape, the PISA awareness campaign stands as a testament to the country’s commitment to fostering a robust, effective, and globally competitive educational system.
