Umushyikirano 2024 Sets Focus on Economic Resilience, Unity, and Youth Leadership

Rwandans gathered at the Kigali Convention Centre on Tuesday, January 23, for the commencement of the 19th National Dialogue Council, Umushyikirano.

The two-day event, chaired by the President, aims to foster national development, unity, and youth empowerment. As a homegrown initiative, Umushyikirano emphasizes accountability and dialogue among Rwandans, both within the country and abroad, and friends of Rwanda.

The program for Umushyikirano 2024 includes an opening session featuring the State of the Nation Address, followed by a review of the seven-year National Strategy for Transformation (NST1), nearing its conclusion. Adopted in 2017, NST1 outlines the Government’s plans for economic development in line with Vision 2050.

The discussions will draw on lessons learned, successes, and challenges from previous medium-term development strategies.

The first day will feature a panel discussion on economic resilience and the potential of both traditional and emerging sectors. On the second day, the Ministry of National Unity and Civic Engagement will present Rwanda’s journey of unity and resilience. Another panel will focus on the crucial role of youth leadership in shaping Rwanda’s future.

Participants, including leaders from public and private sectors, religious figures, and ordinary citizens, will engage in discussions on national interests, development challenges, and potential solutions.

Remote participation is facilitated through telephone calls, social media, SMS, television, and radio, allowing individuals to contribute questions and suggestions.

The 2024 Umushyikirano coincides with preparations for the 30th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

The government emphasizes that this national dialogue provides an opportunity to reflect on Rwanda’s unity and resilience journey, aligning with efforts to empower young Rwandans for national transformation.

Additionally, Rwandans are gearing up for the presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for July.

The last Umushyikirano, held in February 2023, resulted in key resolutions, including promoting agricultural and livestock productivity through improved access to finance for farmers, enhanced engagement of the diaspora in national development, quality education improvement, and addressing issues in public service delivery.

As Umushyikirano 2024 unfolds, the anticipation is high for further resolutions that will guide the nation in the year ahead.
